Spitfire model being airbrushed in RAF green and grey camouflage

The soft demarcation of wartime RAF camouflage is one of the most satisfying things to get right on a 1/72 or 1/48 fighter. Here is how I do it freehand.

Thinning and pressure

Thin acrylics to roughly the consistency of semi-skimmed milk and drop the pressure to around 12–15 psi. Work close to the surface.

Lay the lighter colour first

Spray Ocean Grey over the whole upper surface, then trace the pattern in Dark Green with a thin outline before filling in.

Tip: pencil the pattern on lightly first. Graphite vanishes under paint.

Finishing

  • Gloss coat before decals

  • A thin panel line wash

  • Matt varnish to tie it together
